Competition Opportunity!

For those who are interested in pageants, here is an opportunity that you might not have heard about:

The Ms./Mrs. Corporate America Pageant!

It's too late for this year, but how awesome would it be for a Phi Rho to win next year?  For the Ms. competition, you must be single, unmarried, or widowed, and the Mrs. competition is, appropriately, for the married ladies.  The other major requirements are that you must be at least 20 years of age but no older than 55 years of age, and you must work in a corporate setting.  A full list of eligibility requirements can be found at the website above.

So, not only would you be Ms. or Mrs. Corporate America, you could win prizes like a vacation package, laptop, flat screen TV, and $5,000 cash!  The competition was this weekend in Orlando, FL, but next year, it would be fantastic to have a Phi Rho win each competition!  Go Phi Rho!

Guest Blog Post: Beth Holloway (Alpha), Lifetime Achievement Award Winner

After Beth Holloway was recognized in 2009 for being Phi Sigma Rho's first Lifetime Achievement Award winner, I asked her to write something for our blog. Here is what Beth wanted to share with us!

Sara DaSilva
National VP of Alumnae Affairs

"When Sara asked me to be a guest blogger, I wondered what on earth I would blog about.  It seemed too cliché to write about Phi Sigma Rho and what it meant to me while I was in school.  I could write about my reactions to being the first Phi Rho Lifetime Achievement Award winner, I’m not sure anyone would want to read such an emotional post about how I was humbled and honored and really not sure if I was the really the best pick given the amazing accomplishments of many of my sisters.

So it took me awhile to decide what to write.  And while I was thinking about all this, I was having a conversation with my husband about renovating our kitchen, and what that would mean.  I was sitting there trying very hard to picture what it might look like when it was done.  Then I thought of the many other remodeling projects I’d been through, and how it was hard to remember what the room looked like in the before state.  And it occurred to me that Phi Sigma Rho is a bit like that remodeled house.  I would never presume to describe what being a Phi Rho at Purdue was like for the founders and the first few pledge classes.  But I suspect that it was different than it was for me, as a member of the Eta pledge class (6th class if my counting is correct).   As it is now different for the current members of the Purdue chapter, which is currently going through a remodeling of sorts.

As someone who is so comfortable with my memories of Phi Sigma Rho, it’s hard for me to envision a new, refashioned Phi Rho.  One with a house in the Acres where all the sisters live, and so much like the other, traditional Panhellenic sororities.  And yet, that was the vision we had all along.  Someday, our Phi Rho sisters will look back and wonder what the sorority was like before the house.  And Phi Sigma Rho will be forever changed.  But a common thread weaves us all together, creating a beautiful tapestry that respects our history, celebrates our present, and leaves space for our future, and that thread is sisterhood.  To the current actives – you have the luck to be living through the “mess” of the remodeling process; try to enjoy it and don’t mind the dust too much!  And to all my sisters, past, present, and future, Phi Rho Love forever."

Who wants free money?

Who wants free money?  Well, who doesn't?

Now's the chance for chapters to get some cash!  There are nine days left for chapters to submit an application for a LEAP incentive award!  This is a $100 award available for chapters to use for leadership programming, and is most commonly used for national meetings, like Leadership Conference 2010 coming up this summer in Cleveland.  (Side note - registration opens this week, so stay tuned for more information!)

So why do you care?  If you're an active, you should care because the LEAP incentive could help cover your registration fee for conference this summer.  If you're an alumna, you should care because you don't want your chapter to miss out on this freebie and maybe the opportunity to send one more active to conference.  Each chapter is required to send at least one delegate to conference, so each chapter should be applying!

So what can you do?  Actives, remind your presidents that the application deadline is coming up, and maybe offer to help out with the application (although it's really quite painless).  Alumnae, remind your chapters of how many fantastic memories you have from national meetings as an active and make sure that they don't miss out on the same opportunities!

Applications are due by midnight on March 15, to LEAP@phisigmarho.org.  No late applications will be accepted!  Please email the LEAP director at this address if you need an application or have any questions.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at Conference 2010 this summer!

Barbie goes Computer Engineering!

After 50 years and 125 dolls, Mattel has finally come out with Computer Engineer Barbie!  It's an exciting day for engineers interested in Barbie, and a great opportunity to show girls a little insight into engineering.

It appears that young girls weren't the ones that voted for computer engineer, but this is still a great way to encourage them to look at engineering. Remember when Barbie once talked about how Math is tough?  Glad to see she's come a long way in just a few years.

Great job to the Society of Women Engineers and National Academy of Engineering for working with Mattel to make this happen!  I know I'm looking forward picking up on when it comes out in the fall.
